Title: I Wouldn’t Start From Here!

Author: Martin Avis

Article:
In the old joke, a man goes up to an old-timer and asks how to
get to the local library. The old man thinks for a minute and
then says “It’s quite simple really, but I wouldn’t start from
here!”

Sounds silly? Well why do so many people design their web sites
like that?

It is a basic human need to know where we are at any given
moment. If we were to be blindfolded and set down in a strange
city, most of us would panic. It isn’t a logical, thought-out
response – simply a wired-in emotional reaction to feeling
out-of-place.

Almost every tourist center in the world provides maps and
guidebooks for their visitors. They don’t do it just to make a
few dollars extra – they do it to stop thousands of folks from
asking their staff directions the whole time.

Yet how many web sites are ‘designed’ without a single thought
for making it easy for visitors to find their way around?

Frighteningly few!

Most people have a need to build a mental picture of where they
have been, and where they are now. If a web site does not help
them satisfy that need, they will form an unconscious negative
impression. Then, the quality of the information on the site
becomes secondary to their basic human instinct. They will
quickly click away and look for an alternative, better organized
site.

Site navigation is not simply about a nav-bar on your home page.
It encompasses three tightly interlinked factors:

* Home page navigation * Site ‘look and feel’ * Reassurance

Taking these things one at a time, let’s look at how your site
can be friendly to your visitors, and how they will feel good
about you.

Home Page Navigation ———————

Every site makes some kind of stab at this. Whether it is a side
bar or a top bar, an image map or in-text links, virtually all
web designers make some attempt to move visitors on into the
depths of the site.

But wait – let’s think about how it is often done.

Too many links. Why throw a link to everything onto the front
page? A few themed links directing visitors of discrete sections
of the site are more comforting.

Too few links. Unless there is a very good reason to make people
follow your site in a linear fashion, it is much better to let
them browse in the order they choose.

Unclear links. However you decide to design your page, ensure
that the links are clear as day. Use of underlined text on a
page that is not a link is confusing, as is changing the default
way that links are displayed. If you do play design games like
this, make sure you have a very good reason, and that your
visitors have no choice but to understand.

Dead links. Do I really need to mention that this is a no-no?
Apparently, because so many sites still have links that either
do nothing or point to ‘under construction’ pages. If you don’t
have the content – don’t make the link.

Site Look and Feel ——————

If you are walking around Paris, New York, London, or any other
major city, there is a particular look and feel to the place.
Visitors like that: it addresses that instinctual need to know
where we are.

What cities and countries do with architecture and landmarks,
web sites need to do with design.

Many people sneer at the pre-designed templates that come with
web design software like ‘FrontPage’ and ‘HotMetal’, but the
idea is sound: creating a themed ‘look’. In this way, visitors
know they are on your site, whichever page they are on.

Reassurance ———–

Just as well-drafted maps and effective signposts help tourists
to confidently find their way around, so too must we ensure that
our site visitors never feel lost.

The easiest way to do this is to put the whole site’s navigation
system on every page. An effective device is to color-code menu
items and page backgrounds so that folks know intuitively which
section they are in.

Provide browsers with familiar landmarks and they will be
content to keep on looking at what you have to offer.

Redesigns are often a quick way of making your visitors uneasy.
Now, I have no problem with redesigns – most sites get dated
after a while – but not at the expense of functionality.

In fact, it seems to be an Internet rule that the more a site is
‘redesigned’ the more it becomes impossible to navigate. I had
been visiting one ISP’s site for a couple of years to pick up
occasional emails. Then, suddenly, they decided they needed a
redesign. After their (probably vastly expensive) designers had
made it modern, the link to email was hidden way down the page.
It took me 5 minutes to find it.

Guess which email account I am no longer using?

The Internet is, more than almost anything else in this
fast-moving world of ours, all about instant gratification.
Unless your visitor can get to what they want in three clicks,
the likelihood of them exiting increases dramatically.

That is important enough to repeat: you have only three click to
keep your visitor’s attention.

Even beginners to the Internet know that it only takes one
click, in their favorites list, to leave you forever.

Title: “Let Your Little Website Shine” Part 6 (Final in series)

Author: Lynne Schlumpf

Article:
Thanks for joining me this one last time for the sixth and final
part in this series. One final note about the site mentioned
last time: www.websitesthatsuck.com Not only does this site
serve a great purpose for you as a website designer (or final
decision-maker on how your website looks), but it is also an
example of a site you’ll not soon forget. It’s hilarious in some
spots and useful in others. You don’t necessarily have to agree
with the authors of the book about design elements, but you can
learn a thing or two. You can also see some of the worst
websites ever by following their links to the “Daily Sucker”. I
often feel bad for the author of those websites, but it does
motivate them to improve. It should also motivate you not to
make the same mistakes. It’d be pretty embarrassing to be known
as a company that created one of the worst looking websites on
the WWW! I hope it never happens to either of us! 11. Does not
use email addresses obtained from the site to SPAM the people
you got them from. This is another one of my pet peeves. If you
sponsor a contest or sweepstakes on your site, or you ask
visitors to answer a survey, PLEASE don’t see their email
address as “fair game” to SPAM them to death with sales letters!
It’s one thing to sponsor an email newsletter and have them sign
up for it. In these newsletters, you can put short sales pitches
and links to sales sites. Internet users find this to be
acceptable. They figure that you’re providing them with
information, so someone has to pay for it, right? There’s
nothing more annoying to me than to get a bunch of sales junk in
my email box just because I entered a contest. Allowing visitors
to willingly sign up for ezines* or to click on banners on your
site is acceptable. Sending them sales junk by email just
because they visited your site causes them to lose trust in you.
12. Has some kind of newsletter so that its visitors can keep in
touch: I mentioned this item briefly in Element number 12, but
now I will expound on why the email newsletter, or ezine as it
is called, is an effective method of marketing if it’s used
creatively. If you would like to start an email newsletter that
you can use to keep in touch with visitors to your site, you can
create one free here: www.listbot.com Create a link to your
newsletter on your site to allow visitors to sign up free. As
long as your newsletter has some content, they’ll stay
subscribed. I despise email newsletters that are nothing but
sales pitches all the way through, with links to go buy
something. I unsubscribe myself pretty quick from these. Make
sure you have clear instructions at the bottom of each
newsletter ezine that lets them unsubscribe if they want to.
There’s nothing worse than someone being subscribed to your
newsletter long after they want to be. They tend to get VERY
angry! Listbot automatically puts this information at the bottom
of every newsletter you mail. One of my most successful ezines
was a jokelist. (If you also decide to do a jokelist, make sure
you have a disclaimer about it being possibly offensive and only
intended for those over 18 years of age) I usually had 4 or 5
good jokes in it, with a few sales mentions at the top of each
issue. The sales mentions were not hard sell. They merely
mentioned that my online store had a new item or was having a
sale. I rarely had anyone unsubscribe from this newsletter.
Another really successful one was a recipe newsletter. People
love recipes. Try to think of a newsletter you could write that
you could be really creative and interesting with. If you’re an
expert at something (most everyone is an expert at one thing, at
least!), create a newsletter that targets people who are
interested in that one thing. Keeping in mind who your target
subscribers are and what they are interested in helps keep the
newsletter on track. 13. Has clear navigation: I get the giggles
everytime I think of this subject because of the way it was
handled on one of my favorite websites. I’ll get to that in a
minute, but let me just mention a few things about navigation.
Just take a look at some of your favorite websites to get an
idea of how simple they make their navigation links. If they’re
into some depth in your site and want to know what page they’re
on, put page number links in a corner somewhere. Put simple
boxes across the top or down the side with links that tell them
how to get back home. Plan your website on paper first if you
like, kind of like a logic flowchart. You can use Microsoft
Frontpage 2000′s navigation and hyperlinks icons to do this
also. Then test, test, and more test. Have others go to your
website and tell you if it’s confusing. Now, I will let one of
my favorite sites explain the concept of what they call “Mystery
Meat Navigation” to you. You’ll come out laughing, but you’ll
remember the lesson well. Go here to check out their discussion
of this topic:

Title: How to Create an Effective Navigation Structure for Your Site -
Part 1

Author: Herman Drost

Article:
A ship captain traversing the open seas without a good
navigation system will surely get lost. Maybe he’ll strike sharp
rocks and his ship will sink. A visitor who arrives at your site
and can’t navigate it for the information they seek, will surely
get lost also and leave in frustration. Your ship (your web
site) will also sink if this continues to happen.

Good site design means a good navigation structure for your web
site. This means the visitor can find the information with ease.
Put yourself in the shoes of your Grandmother. Would she quickly
and effortlessly be able to find the information she wants, or
know what to click on to make the purchase? Don’t think that
just because it is easy for you, it will be easy for others.

Visitors should not need to click more than three times during
their navigation, to find the information they are searching
for.

1. Navigation Styles These can range from navigation buttons,
navigation bars, plain text links, fancy animated graphics or
drop-down select menus. You can also use illustrations,
photographs or graphic images to show your visitor around. For
example, an image map contains one graphic with different “hot
spots”(invisible buttons) that link to other pages.

2. Primary and Secondary Navigation Primary navigation consists
of the navigation elements that are accessible from most
locations within the site.

Secondary navigation elements allow the user to navigate within
a specific location. For example, many sites have a page that
offers information about the company. The primary navigation
element may be an About Us link.

Once the user arrives on the About Us page, there will be other
links (secondary links), which navigate within the About Us
page.

These could be links to Press Releases, Corporate Locations,
Investor Information and so on. These links are secondary
navigation elements because they are relevant to the About Us
page but not the other pages of the site. Therefore, these links
will not be found in other areas of the site.

3. Guided Navigation This is a popular technique, in which you
guide the visitor through your site. Links are provided for the
next step and establishing links that keep the users on track
continues the process. These links should supply the necessary
information, as well as an alternate course clearly marked to
allow the visitor to exit. For example, an online purchase
should lead the user through shipping information, then on to
payment information, then to receipt information.

4. Creating a Navigation Action Plan Determine goals and needs
of your audience Decide what the purpose of your site is and who
your target audience will be. For more in-depth information on
this subject visit: “How to Target Your Customers and Put Them
in a Buying Mood” (www.isitebuild.com arget.htm)

Learn from navigation that works Visit several successful sites
that show good navigation e.g., Fedex.com. These sites show good
navigation planning.

Generally, good navigation includes several characteristics:

Offers easy to learn elements Remains consistent Provides
feedback Appears in context Offers alternatives Provides clear
visual messages Offers clear and understandable labels Remains
appropriate to the site’s purpose Supports visitors goals and
behaviors

Providing feedback has the biggest impact on users. Navigation
should tell people, where they are and if possible, where they

Title: Headlines: Your Big Opener

Author: Martin Avis

Article:
The headline is probably the most important thing on the most
important page of your web site.

Yet far too many web designers ignore its power and simply put
up a meaningless statement: “Welcome to my site.”

If your headline doesn’t grab the attention in a fraction of a
second, the chances are that the visitor to your site will fail
to read any further – and click away.

Powerful headlines should include as many of these elements as
possible:

* Personal – use ‘You’ and ‘Your’.

* Direct – if you are making a claim, make it clearly.

* Convincing – don’t over claim: people aren’t fools.

* Intriguing – good headlines make you want to know more.

* Emotional – if you can touch a reader’s positive emotions,
they won’t be able turn away. Emotions capture the imagination.
One of the most famous headlines of all time had emotion by the
barrel-load: “My friends all laughed when I sat down at the
piano. But when I began to play…”

* Benefit driven – good headlines say what the product will do
for you, not how.

* Pose a positive response question – questions in which the
only sensible response is yes can be very powerful: which of
these would make you read on – ‘Would you spend $1 to save
$100?’, or, ‘Would you like to invest in our plan?’

* Active – use strong, active words. Passive, weak writing has
no place in copywriting.

* Use copywriter’s ‘magic’ words – some words have so much power
that they regularly appear in headlines. Fourteen common ones
are: How to, New, Secret, Save, Get, Free, Bonus, You, Unique,
Exclusive, Now, Why, Guaranteed, Risk-free.

* Short, punchy words. Long words with lots of syllables are
difficult to scan. Avoid them.

* Empathize with the reader – show that you understand and can
solve their problem: “Do you despair of ever losing weight?
Discover the secret of how I beat my yo- yo cycle and lost 42
pounds forever.” Know who you are writing for – understand your
target audience – and write directly to them.

Write lots of headlines and test for the best.

Don’t cop out on your headline. Polish it, cherish it and it
will be the key to the success of your web site.

Simply putting a couple of pictures up with some text that may contain a few random keywords is not going to see your site powering its way up the Google rankings. So what are the vital ingredients for good web design? Anyone can design a website. Once you start putting a website together you begin to realize that there is far more to good web design than first meets the eye. There are plenty of templates, freeware and online instructions that allow anyone with access to a PC and a bit of free time to try their hand at web design.

Because of the emphasis placed on original content by the search engines, good web design incorporates killer content right from the start. For many years, the established web design practice was to put together a site first and then create the content to fit the ‘gaps’ left over.
* Good Web Design – What is it?
A question to ask yourself when deciding how to do your website is:
* Good Web Site Design – web page design There is unlimited possibilities when it comes to designing a website. Flash, Database, content management, Client Login, etc, etc.
They are in business to make money so they use templates in order to produce the maximum amount of product for the minimum cost. If your goal is to create something original, you have to do it yourself. There are very few web pages on the Internet that clearly state what is good web site design and what is not good web site design. Design professionals are not in business to create masterpieces.
* Good Web Site Design Programming
They are in business to make money so they use templates in order to produce the maximum amount of product for the minimum cost. If your goal is to create something original, you have to do it yourself. There are very few web pages on the Internet that clearly state what is good web site design and what is not good web site design. Design professionals are not in business to create masterpieces.
* Good Web Design
These days, there is a web site out there for anything you could name. Which means that someone probably has a web site a lot like yours? In today’s highly technical world, everything is online. There is nothing you cannot buy, sell, trade, research, find pictures of, or play if you have a computer and Internet connection. As competition for page views grows more intense, web design more technical, and the Internet more popular, good web design becomes more important than …

Good web design has to take into account both the visual elements and how the content works with that to create a website that’s pleasing to the eye and delivers on its promise of being interesting, informative and engaging. There’s no point having a website that looks pretty if the information contained is totally irrelevant, poorly written or just plain wrong.

Pointing the way

Clear, concise signposts that encourage a visitor to explore the site in more depth can prevent them from ‘bouncing’ to a competitor’s site before they have completed their ‘mission’ – namely to buy your product or answering your call to action. Good web design has to have a ‘plan’ – a road map that guides the visitor around the site and works towards an end goal. That end goal could be heading towards the checkout on an e commerce site or signing up for a newsletter, subscribing to a blog or other interactive processes.

Speaking of which

What is a ‘call to action’? Is it an important part of good web page design? The simple answer is yes, it’s a vital component of good site design, particularly for a business site.
A strong call to action encourages visitors to interact with the site more pro-actively than just reading a block of text or looking at a picture. A call to action can be something as simple as ‘click here for more details on our latest special offer’ or it can be more subtle, gently leading the visitor through the site towards the end goal.

Is a website ever ‘finished’?

Unlike traditional printed marketing materials, a website is an organic thing that continues to grow and develop with your business. Your business expands, so should your website. Good web page design continually tweaks, updates, refreshes and renews, encouraging visitors to return regularly and to build up a relationship with your site. Web design is an ongoing process. It’s never ‘finished’ but is always a ‘work in progress’. Sitting back and hoping that your ‘completed’ website is going to continually climb up the Google rankings and keep pulling in new customers is a misnomer. Interesting sites get linked to, and those juicy inbound links in turn encourage the search engine ‘bots to sniff you out and push you up the rankings. All of this happens organically on the foundation of good web design.

Talk to an agency with a proven track record in producing effective web page design concepts for businesses online, if you’re determined to grow your business online and want to know more about what makes up good web design.

Title: “Let Your Little Website Shine” Part 3

Author: Lynne Schlumpf

Article:
Thanks for joining me again for this series! One more note about
your website before we move on. To enable faster loading, make
sure you designate the size of your graphics in your code and
create alternate text (the alt tag) for those who don’t feel
like waiting for your page to load. Now we move on to just plain
good customer service: 4. Quick response when people request
information, report trouble: This one pretty much speaks for
itself, but it is worth mentioning a couple of things about
this. Try, if you can, to check your email at least 3 times a
day. Many people are shut-ins or retired or homeworkers, and
they expect a quick response to their questions or complaints.
If your Internet Provider can give you access to
Auto-Responders, these are fairly successful in giving your
website visitors a quick response that says you’ve received
their email and will respond as soon as possible, but sometimes
these auto-responders annoy people more than they put them at
ease. Human beings always prefer to talk to human beings. This
is especially evident in the fact that people still consider
voice mail and answering machines a necessary evil. Some may see
your auto-responder as just that. Auto-responders are more
effectively used when someone wants some detailed information
and wants it immediately. If at all possible, ask for their
phone number so you can call them and give them answers live. I
cannot count how many times I have answered our corporate line,
only to hear a big sigh of relief on the other end, followed by
the person saying, “Wow, I got a live voice!” Many people prefer
not to be called on the phone, so give them a choice when they
write to you. Some are paranoid that you’re going to try to sell
them something. If they email and expect email in return, make
it polite, prompt, and helpful. If you are not sure what they’re
asking, don’t try to create an answer from incomplete facts from
them. Ask them to clarify by return email so that you may answer
their question more effectively. Customer service, customer
service, and more customer service will make you stand heads
above your competition. Try a little experiment with some of
your competitors. See how long or in what way they respond to a
question about their site. As far as reporting trouble on your
web page operations, this was mentioned in Element 3 above. If
they are reporting trouble about a product or service you sold
them, offer them choices of restitution. Most people will not
want to return something if it can be resolved over the phone.
Give them a liberal guarantee, like 90 days or something.
They’ll appreciate this more than you’ll know. 5. Is useful:
There is nothing worse than going to a website that you expected
to find “content” in, only to discover it is just a bunch of
garbage sales talk or just plain trash. This is usually the case
when a company does not understand how to sell on the web or is
just plain too lazy to plan their content carefully. A website
should be useful to the target market of buyers you are aiming
at. If you are selling widgets, have a section of FREE
information just on everything you can find out about the
history of widgets and all aspects of using them. If you provide
a service, have some information that is useful background for
the buyers of that service. Sit down with a pad of paper before
you ever design your website, and make a hand-written plan of
how you want it to look. Include the elements described in this
article. Giving something free on your site, like free
information that is really worth something, will make them feel
more at ease about purchasing whatever it is you are selling. If
a website only sells something but gives nothing in return, it’s
just plain garbage. Many MLM websites are like this. (no offense
to MLMs!) In contrast, one couple decided they really loved
peacocks, so they created a website based only on information
about peacocks, such as how to raise them. The website started
out as just a hobby type of site, but the end result now is that
they sell more peacocks than they can breed. They are sold out
as soon as babies are born. The other end result is that the CEO
of the company wrote a full-length book just on peacocks and
sells that on his website now, too. Another example was a man
who decided he was a pretty knowledgeable government contractor.
He wrote articles on his site about how to have the upper hand
when it comes to being awarded government contracts. His site is
now selling a lot of information, as well as providing it free.
His company was recently purchased by another company and sells
books, CD-ROMs, and all sorts of other information about this
subject. These websites, in contrast to those websites you see
that just look like sales letters, are useful. They serve a
purpose that keeps people coming back. No one wants to see a
whole website dedicated to “I love my company and this is what
we do”. They only care what you do if you dedicate one page to
“About Us”, and the rest of the website keeps their attention
with useful information. Plan your website around your expertise
on a given subject. Eat, breathe and sleep that subject. Learn
everything you possibly can about the subject, and write about
it. Gone are the days that you can have a website that just
sells information. You’ve got to “give away” some of your
expertise, too, or your website hits are going to be pitiful at
best. You’ll be lucky to get 10 people a day to come and look.
Enough said on this little pet peeve of mine!

Title: IS YOUR WEB SITE UNFRIENDLY? Part 1 of 9

Author: Laraine Anne Barker

Article:
First, let’s pay a virtual visit to a web site that is my
definition of unfriendly, although it doesn’t have all the
faults I will cover in this series of articles.

On a group to which I subscribe, someone posted an invitation to
check out a free story. He even included some glowing reviews to
whet our appetites. And the story sounded really interesting.
But when I went to the URL given by the author, the page wasn’t
the story I expected. Apart from a load of Tripod pop-up ads
that I thought would never stop coming, a Java splash page
loaded in. That was followed by a most unexpected page–bright
green print on a black background. I think the author must have
been pining for the days before Windows made DOS computers so
much easier to use as well as easier on the eyes! To add insult
to injury, the writer included a sound file with absolutely no
way of turning the sound off. Fortunately the file (mostly bird
song) wasn’t objectionable. I didn’t read the page of
course–after all, it wasn’t the promised story. Since I
couldn’t even find a link that looked remotely as though it
might lead to the story, I went somewhere else.

The first thing I want to deal with that makes a web site
unfriendly is page width.

Preferably design your web site to be viewable on a 12-13″
monitor. (Yes, there ARE still some of these around!) A good
yardstick is to keep it within the default width of your
browser. I find it mildly irritating when I’m forced to pull my
browser out to the full width of my monitor.

However, having to scroll past the width of the screen is
downright irritating–a bit like trying to read a comic or
newspaper and having someone else continually covering up the
right-hand side of the page. If a site stretches past my 15″
(640 x 480) monitor I have to be very keen on its content to
stay–and I probably don’t go back to it. Page lengths are not
quite so important and will vary depending on content, but it’s
not a good idea to make them too long.

Statistics from my own web site indicate that just over 20% of
people are still using 640 x 480 monitors. So, if you design
your site only for the majority of visitors, you’re effectively
blocking out more than a fifth of Web surfers– or at least
making it difficult for them to appreciate your site fully.
